Tambaram Municipality's E-governance project was launched in October 2002. Within a short time the E-governance services have drawn all round appreciation.

The municipality received several letters and emails appreciating our first step towards E-governance with citizens in Tambaram and those from Tambaram currently residing abroad offering us their encouragement and suggestions to improve our services. Many of your email and appreciation over phone and in person has been a source of inspiration for us to enhance our effort in introducing E-governance. The municipality is currently updating progress on the projects undertaken by it. Please visit the progress reporting page for more details. We are also happy to announce a comprehensive databank covering various aspects like list of hospitals, blood banks, medical practitioners, colleges, schools, libraries, etc in Tambaram. This will continuously updated so please check back often and also offer your suggestions.

About Tambaram

Tambaram Town is situated 24 K.M. south of the Capital City of Chennai. The famous Grand Southern Trunk Road and Railway route from Chennai Egmore to Kanyakumari divide the town into east and West. The Municipal Town, Tambaram is described as Gateway of the Beautiful Metropolitan City, Chennai.

Tambaram is very popular because of the existence of world-renowned Madras Christian College, IAF training center, and the first commissioned suburban trains from Tambaram to Beach. Nowadays almost all trains to southern parts of Tamil Nadu start only from Tambaram. This Municipal Town is also proud of being home to a number of industrial units established at the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ). The units in the MEPZ export various items to several foreign countries thereby earning foreign exchange for the country.

Tambaram is one of the busiest towns in and around Chennai with extensive transport facilities. Tambaram Town is also well known for its reputed educational institutions.

Prior to 1964, Tambaram was a small Panchayat. In 1964 it was constituted as Grade III Municipality comprising the Village Panchayats of Pulikoradu, Irumbliyur, Selaiyur. Due to rapid development and growth of the town commercially and residentially, the Municipality is now classified as a Selection Grade Municipality. The population as per 2001 census is 1,33,667 besides a floating population of more than 1 lakh per day. The extent of the municipality is 20.72 sq.km.

The Municipality gets an income of about Rs 465.00 lakhs per annum, out of which nearly Rs 362.00 lakhs is spent towards meeting the basic needs of Water Supply, Electricity and other civic amenities such as laying and maintenance of roads (100.403 KM in length at present). The Highways also maintains Block Tapped Roads to a length of 9.80 KM.

To cope with the increasing need of basic amenities, the Municipal Town is evincing keen interest in developing the Quality and Quantity of the essential amenities that are enjoyed by the public.

Tambaram's E-Governance Project

As a first local body institution of Tamil Nadu, we take pride and immense pleasure in announcing that our administration has embraced E-Governance. Through this the website, we hope that the administration will be able to enlighten the public more effectively about its activities and this will also pave the way for better, efficient and prompt administration.

At present the municipality offers its citizens the following services under our E-governance program.

WEBSITE (www.snegham.com)
The snegham.com website is Tambaram Municipality's gateway on the Internet. The web site has a special E-Governance module that allows visitors to view the current projects being implemented by the municipal as well as find out current status of each project. A backend tool for the E-Governance module of the web site allows Municipality officials to update project progress online so the latest project information is always available to visitors. The Web site provides extensive information on the Municipality ranging from historical background on Tambaram to the present status of the Municipality. The details available on the web site can be accessed by user worldwide via the Internet.

TOUCHSCREEN KIOSKS
A touch screen system has been installed at the Municipality office that provides visitors and citizens with general information about Tambaram Municipality like extent of coverage, list of elected members, Municipal Administration, etc. In addition to such general information, the touchscreen system also lists out contact information for the Municipality officials and elected members. Further the system also displays details of current schemes and projects undertaken by the Municipality. This touchscreen system is available both in Tamil as well as in English.

SNEGHAM CIVIC CENTRE LAN / WAN NETWORK
A high-speed private network has been installed at the Municipality connecting the Municipal office and designated banks in the Municipality. This allows citizens to check status of property tax and water charges etc., and make payments from the banks itself without having to come to the Municipal office. Further if the citizens pays the tax at the bank this status is immediately updated at the central database in the Municipal office using the network.
